About
Raised Barn Press
Raised Barn Press is a publishing company focused on creating printed and digital
media artifacts that are, themselves, artistic creations ("art publishing"). Formed
in 2001 by San Francisco photographer and entrepreneur Holly Kreuter and her friends,
the company is committed to working on collaborative projects focused on community,
art and the intersection of the two. Initially, Raised Barn Press will focus on
projects in and around the San Francisco Bay area arts community with emphasis
on the unconventional and interactive. The company will specialize in projects
of a modern or multimedia nature, for example DVDs or CD-ROMs, along with books.
The company's mission is to cultivate a richer appreciation of art in its many
forms, to uphold the integrity of the artist and to generate a deeper sense of
connection to community by creating high quality collector's items that bring
the creative activities of a particular community to a larger audience.
The first project is the book Drama
in the Desert. The book contains photographs Holly took at the annual
Burning Man festival in northern Nevada between 1995 and 2001, as well as essays
and poems from about 70 artists who have attended the event. The hard-cover book
includes a DVD with audio recordings and video, as well as an original score.
Raised Barn Press represents a new approach to art production focused specifically
on the alternative arts community. The company was formed with the intention of
cultivating the collaborative, free-spirited, creative and interactive ethos that
has emerged from Burning Man. In much of western society, attention is focused
on art as commerce; works created by a few career artists funneled through galleries
and museums, and ultimately onto the walls of the wealthy. Raised Barn Press is
dedicated to recognizing "art" in the larger context, spotlighting otherwise overlooked
creative projects and returning to the concept of art as an intrinsic part of
culture to be shared by everyone. |
